The Story Behind This Book
This book exists because of one woman.
My grandmother, we called her Nana, raised a family of six in Graves County, Kentucky. She cooked three meals a day from scratch for her entire life. Her pantry was never empty. Not during the Depression. Not during the war. Not during the recession. Not once.
She had a wood stove she never replaced, a cast iron skillet seasoned for forty years, and a glass flour jar on the second shelf that was always full. She never owned a microwave. Never bought a loaf of bread from a store. Never spent more than a few dollars on a week of groceries.
She fed six people every single day on almost nothing. and nobody ever left that table hungry.
. Nana, Graves County, Kentucky
I grew up in her kitchen. I watched her cook thousands of meals. I never wrote any of it down because I thought she'd always be there to ask.
She wasn't.
The $2 Kitchen Bible is my attempt to write down everything she knew. and everything I've found in old cookbooks, farm journals, USDA bulletins, and handwritten recipe cards from estate sales, so it doesn't disappear with her generation.
